How to use a Victor rat trap

victor-rat-trap.jpg

The Victor Rat Trap is a classic snap trap designed to target rats.

The trap comes inside a wooden trap box that helps keep pets, children and non-target animals safe.

Where to put your trap

Place trap box on a flat surface near compost bins, along walls or under cover where you know there are rats lurking.

Always place the trap inside the wooden box to protect pets, other non-target animals and children from the trap.

What bait to use

Rats love anything high in fat as they are more attracted to energy-rich foods.

They love peanut butter and jam. Bacon fat and chocolate are also proven winners.

How to set your trap

Pull the kill bar back and hold down with your thumbs.

While still holding the kill bar with one thumb, bring the trigger arm over the kill bar and place into the groove in the treadle.

The trigger arm can be placed on the far left (firm setting) or far right (sensitive setting).

A firm setting is easier to set but means that the trap is less sensitive to trigger. A sensitive setting is harder to set but will trigger very easily.

Lift the treadle plate towards you and slowly remove your thumb from the kill bar until the trigger arm is caught in the treadle.

Checking your trap

Check the trap frequently (every few days) when you first put it out.

If the trap needs to be deactivated, hold the trap with the treadle plate closest to you.

Hold down the kill bar with one hand and flick out the trigger arm from the treadle. Slowly release the kill arm towards you while keeping your fingers out of the way.

Remove any old bait from the treadle and throw away from the trap site.

Ensure the trap and its mechanisms (springs, kill arm, trigger arm and treadle) are clean using a wire brush if required.

Sharing trap data

Recording trap catch data is an essential part of predator control. We use an online tool called Trap.NZ to report catches. Read our guide to using Trap.NZ and let us know what you catch!
