How to use Trap.NZ

Recording trap data is an essential part of predator control.

Trap.NZ is used nationally as a predator trapping and monitoring data management system.

Reporting what you catch (or don’t catch) helps monitor the success of backyard trapping and identify areas we need to improve on.

Follow this guide and help Predator Free Dunedin keep track of who’s trapping what in their backyards.

Set up an account

Go to www.trap.nz and select the "Register now" button to create an account.

You will receive an email from Trap.NZ with a link asking to verify your registration.

Join a project

Go to “Find project” and search for the project you want to join. You can join one of the following Predator Free Dunedin projects:

Click "Request membership". The project administrator will activate your account.

Add your trap

Click “My projects” and select the project. Click “Traps” and select “Add a new trap”.

Fill in the details for your trap. Make sure to enter your trap's unique ID if it has one.

Add your trap data

When you are in a project, it will show all traps in the project area.

However, you will only be able to enter data for traps you have created or that have been assigned to you.

Click “Traps” and enter your trap name or number in the “Title” cell. Click “Apply filter” and your trap will appear on the map.

Scroll to below the map and click the trap you want to enter data for. Information about the trap will appear with a map.

On the right-hand side of the screen, click “Add a new trap record”.

Fill in the details of your catch. Make sure to click “Save” after each entry.

When to enter data

It’s helpful if all trap visits are recorded, whether it’s to check if the trap has gone off, rebait it, clear a catch or do maintenance.

Trap.NZ App

The Trap.NZ app is a useful way to enter data when you are in the field (or garden).

Download the app from the Apple Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and log in to your account. You will be able to enter data for traps which have been assigned to you.
