Town Belt Kaitiaki

Town Belt Kaitiaki (TBK) is a student-led education programme for Dunedin schools and ECE centres.

We’re helping young people develop knowledge about the environment, values that reflect environmental stewardship, leadership skills and overall hauora.

TBK also provides professional development and support to teachers to help them incorporate outdoor education activities in the town belt into their curriculum.

Get involved

The Town Belt is 203 hectares in size and its birds need our help to breed and feed safe from predators. You can help protect the birds of our precious Town Belt by starting or getting involved with a predator control project there. Town Belt Kaitiaki student leaders can do a variety of projects that include finding out what predators are present in a part of the Town Belt that’s near their school, monitoring them with track tunnels and chew cards or taking responsibility for a trap line. City Sanctuary will give you the training you need and your TBK Link Teacher and Education Coordinator will support you. Contact TBK’s Education Coordinator Maureen Howard for more information.

Key native species: Tūī, korimako/bellbird, kererū, pīwakawaka/fantail

Target predator(s): Possums, rats.
